STEAM SFX
Welcome to steam special effects, a microsite about steam effects for film and tv. For cups of coffee or steam locomotives, we create realistic steam vapour effects with a mixture of safe steam systems. You know creating steam effects with a traditional boiler has many safety issues, including hot hoses and er, jets of scolding steam, right?
Traditional boilers are useful if you require a large volume of liquid such as a pool or a tank to be heated, but if there is action close by or actors are physically involved we (cough, proud chestpuff) use our own adapted cold water MEE steam system. MEE uses filtered water pressurised to 1000psi to create steam special effects, which we sometimes combine with liquid CO2 or a quick dispersal smoke fluid. We used MEE extensively in the mine scenes in Peter Weir’s ‘The Way Back’, and it gave fabulous results.
