Atmospheric Effects for Film, TV and Commercials

Smoke, haze, fog, mist and weather atmosphere for studio and location shoots.

Atmospheric Effects for Film and TV

Agog SFX creates practical atmospheric and weather effects for film, television, commercials and live production.

Our work covers smoke, haze, fog, mist, low fog, rain, snow, wind, frost, ice, dust, ash and other environmental effects for studio and location shoots.

Smoke, Haze, Fog, Mist and Weather Atmosphere

Atmosphere is often most successful when the audience does not consciously notice it. A room may need haze to give shape to the light. A street may need smoke, rain or mist to feel cold, dangerous or alive. A battlefield may need dust, ash, firelight and heavy air. A winter scene may need snow, wind, frost and visible breath.

The effect may be subtle, but it still has to be controlled. Density, airflow, continuity, alarms, surfaces, clean-up, cast safety and camera placement all affect how atmosphere behaves on set.

Atmospheric SFX for Real Locations

Agog works in studios, real locations, period interiors, public buildings, commercial spaces and exterior environments where practical effects need to be planned around cast, crew, equipment, surfaces, ventilation and safety requirements.

We can supply atmospheric effects as part of a supervised SFX package, with crew, machines, materials, testing, risk assessment and on-set control. Related services include smoke effects, fog effects, dry ice and low fog effects, rain effects, snow effects and wind effects.

Atmosphere at Work

Agog’s atmospheric and environmental effects can be seen in productions including Peter Weir’s The Way Back, Guan Hu’s The Eight Hundred and Tim Burton’s Wednesday for Netflix.

Atmospheric effects for film: what we control on set

Atmospheric SFX is not simply “putting smoke in the room”. The effect has to behave for the camera, lighting, cast, crew and schedule. Agog plans the work around the space, the airflow, the required density, the continuity between takes, the alarm systems, the surface risks and the clean-up.

For interiors, that may mean a barely visible haze to give shape to light without clouding the scene. For exteriors, it may mean weather, smoke, dust or mist that gives the location scale and texture. For period drama, battlefield work, commercials or music videos, the atmosphere has to support the image without pulling attention away from the performance or the story.

Agog can supply the effect as a supervised practical SFX package, including crew, equipment, testing, risk assessment, method statements and on-set control. Where required, this work can be combined with rain, snow, wind, fire, pyro, fabrication, modelmaking or SFX equipment rental.

Planning atmosphere for real shoots

Atmospheric effects need to be planned around the realities of the shoot, not just the look of the final frame. Materials and machines behave differently depending on the space, airflow, lighting, lens choice, alarm systems, surfaces, cast movement and continuity between takes.

Agog can advise on the right machines, fluids, materials, crew and control methods before the shoot begins, then supervise the effect on set so the atmosphere remains consistent, safe and usable for the camera.
