BLOOD SFX
This special effects blood microsite shows some disturbing bloody cinema effects achieved with fake blood, colouring and various thickeners and mediums to provide the gore. We make up special effects blood to match the creative effect needed from light, bright red arterial droplets and spray to venous thick, maroon clarets and sticky, coagulated, brown and black caked blood. Often our blood effects and rigs are used to pump blood into action prosthetics that are designed to be cut or stabbed. Our hydraulic blood rigs allow us to control blood flow to match reality, or any creative effect desired by the director.
We use blood bags frequently in gunshot and shrapnel wounds, where small pyro charges (squibs) are fixed to backplates behind blood bags containing a mix of blood and gore, all worn with protection under an actor’s clothing. At the correct point the squibs are electrically fired and explode through the bags, expelling the contents. In addition to explosive squib rigs we also use hydraulic and CO2 rigs for bullet hits and woundings and to create and control perspiration, sweat and other fluids. The special effects blood products we make up are biodegradable, safe in contact with skin and where continuity allows, can be non-staining for clothing.
